Napak District, Uganda ; The education sector in Uganda is mourning the loss of Nakoya Joyce Philippine, the District Education Officer (D.E.O) for Napak District, whose passing has left a deep void in the hearts of many who admired her commitment to education, especially the empowerment of the girl child in Karamoja.
A Life of Service and Dedication
The late Nakoya Joyce Philippine was an old girl of Kangole Girls’ Secondary School, an institution that shaped her character and instilled in her the values of discipline, humility, and excellence. After completing her studies, she returned to Kangole as a teacher, passionately serving and mentoring young girls to believe in the power of education.
Her dedication to duty and her unyielding belief in education as a tool for transformation saw her rise through the ranks to become the District Education Officer for Napak. In that role, Nakoya became a beacon of inspiration and a voice for equality in education across the region.
A Champion for the Girl Child
Throughout her career, Nakoya remained a tireless advocate for girl child education in Karamoja. She worked relentlessly to keep young girls in school, often emphasizing that “when you educate a girl, you empower an entire community.” Her efforts contributed significantly to the growing awareness of the importance of educating girls in a region where cultural and economic challenges have long hindered access to education.
Honoured by the Nation’s Leadership
The magnitude of her impact was reflected during her burial, which was graced by Her Excellency Hon. Jessica Alupo, the Deputy President of Uganda. The Vice President, who shared the same school; Kangole Girls’ Secondary School paid tribute to Nakoya’s lifelong service to education and her unwavering commitment to the betterment of Karamoja.
“She was not just a leader; she was a mentor and a role model. Her passion for education and her love for her community will continue to inspire us,” said Hon. Alupo during her burial.
The Kangole Family Mourns a Role Model
The Kangole Girls’ Secondary School community expressed profound sorrow over the loss of one of their outstanding old girls. As a teacher, former student, and education leader, Nakoya Joyce Philippine exemplified the school’s mission of producing women of integrity, leadership, and service.
“Her life was a testimony of what Kangole Girls stands for. She walked the journey from student to leader, always carrying the spirit of Kangole with pride,” a statement from the school read.

The passing of Nakoya Joyce Philippine is a great loss not only to Napak District but to the entire education fraternity in Uganda. Her dedication, compassion, and relentless pursuit of educational equality will remain etched in the memory of all who knew her.
